Oaks neighbors gathered at Bronson Park in near record-setting heat to welcome the advent of summer and celebrate the 100th birthday of our good friend, Milan Herzog. Milan and his wife, Shanta, were joined at the picnic by their grandsons, Ryne and Torrey, and Torrey's wife, Claire. A big, three-piece “1-0-0” birthday cake (baked by Joan Young) was hauled in, along with a hundred balloons and sixty Oaks folks sang Happy Birthday to Milan.
Gerry Hans read greetings from Council Member Tom LaBonge to Milan and to everyone in attendance. Bob Young then presented a City Council Proclamation to Milan Herzog in recognition of his 100th birthday and his many contributions to the neighborhood.
For the kids there were a sack race and a three-legged race as well as a sno-cone booth and an inflated bouncey castle. Earle’s Grille provided the hot dogs, hamburgers and chili. There was a vast raffle – the biggest ever -- of donated gift certificates and other items from Salon Duarte on Franklin, Desire Salon on Bronson, the Home Depot, Palermo’s, Real Raw Live, Vermont Restaurant, La Poubelle, Pimai Thai, the Tam O’Shanter Tailwaggers, Holly Hills Cleaners, Sunset Nursery, Rompage Hardware, Pavillions, Tang’s Donuts, Donna Karan beauty supplies, and Euopean Skin Care.
Thanks to Oaks Board members who set up the picnic early in the morning and took it back down at the end of the day. And special thanks to Stacey Corob, Gerry Hans, Alexander Von Wechmar and Holly Purcell for chasing down all the swell prizes for the raffle.
